So much information teachers need to cover in classes.
So much straight up knowledge students need to learn.
Knowing how to read and understand what the test is asking is never covered.
This includes knowing how to read pictures, maps, charts, graphs, and all the visuals that are used.
Trade and technical schools, many local community colleges do not require the SAT or ACT.
BUT, they have placement tests. They won't be needed if there's already an SAT or ACT score.
Many high schools require one or both tests anyway. The scores can be used instead of placement tests.
In this program, your student will have:
a pre-test and post-test, using questions from the SAT and ACT.
content quizzes that can be taken multiple times.
access to necessary FREE software that WORKS!
lessons on types of reading that are not covered in school.
self-paced lessons that can be skipped, or watched over and over.
hints and tips on reading the essay prompt: makes more of a difference than knowing how to write an essay.
The success of any and all students depends upon three things:
How much do they already know/remember about the subject?
How fast do they learn?
How much effort are they willing to put into new learning?
I made this program knowing that teens need short chunks and a way to bypass what they already know. The pre-test will guide them on what they DON'T know so they can skip the parts they do know. They can go as fast, or as slow, as they need to, and can always go back and rewatch and relearn.
Video Lessons
Step-by-step instructions, how to understand what is being asked of them on standardized tests. An option for lessons on essays is available.
Introduction to Free Software
There are free software resources out there that many do not know about, one that is pivotal to reading comprehension.
Option for Essays and Feedback
This program can include helps and tips on essay prompt reading and writing, if needed. There is an extra option for individual feedback.
I'm a mom of 5 with a Bachelors and two Masters degrees, and a long time teacher in alternative schools who realized ALL students are missing an important life skill: reading comprehension. And if students want to get high SAT and ACT scores to get into the university of their dreams, or the trade/technical program, or local community college, they MUST know how to read and understand the tests.
Because, if you can't understand what's being asked on tests, you can have ALL the knowledge in the world, and you'll still fail.
I've taught this concept to adults returning to school, my own children, students who struggle academically, and students who do very well academically. Every one of them does BETTER once they learn these skills. Understanding what they read is necessary, and though aimed at the SAT and ACT, what your student will learn in this program will help for life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Whether or not this program will work is 100% dependent upon how much time and effort your student is willing to put into learning. Understanding and comprehension in reading are not something you can cram for, it's not rote memory, it may not be easy. However, I firmly believe that EVERY student can learn, and as long as they are willing to put in the effort, this program will work.
Many of the students I have taught have been the ones who struggle academically, and this information, systems, and software programs always make a positive difference, even for those who don't take it seriously. And my students who are gifted with intelligence? They fly after learning these concepts.
I've designed this course to take three to four weeks, a couple hours a day. But again, this is up to your student. I wouldn't recommend going through it in a few days. Reading comprehension can cause brain breaks and there will need to be time for behind-the-scenes brain processing. Your student can always go back into any area to re-learn or refresh their understanding, or retake any quiz or test (initial pre-test that sets the bar excluded).
At the moment, no, I do not. I do have an option of getting individualized responses in reading and writing, if it's picked, but it is done online, through written feedback. This is something I may have as an option in the future.
